Asssesment of physical growth
How can you asses physical growth?
1. Get an accurate body measurement eg.weight, height, head circumference
2. Compare this measurement with growth standards obtained from normal individuals of same age, sex and community. This can be done by one of two methods.
a. Comparison of this single measurement with average for age and sex
b. Plot this measurement on percentile charts/tables
A. Single measurement compared to average
1. Weight
- Average weight at birth is 3-3.5 kg
- There is initial weight loss of 5-10% during the first 3 to 4 days of life
- This loss is usually regained bt the 7th to 20th day of life
- Daily weight gain during infancy
- - 20-30g/day during 1st 3-4 months
- - 15-20g/day for the rest of 1st year.
- In other words, during infancy, weight increase as follows :
- 750g/month ( ¾ kg) for the 1st 4 months (wt = 6kg at 4 months)
- 500g/month ( ½ kg) for the 2nd 4 months (wt = 8kg at 8 months)
- 250g/month ( ¼ kg) for the 3rd 4 months (wt = 9kg at 12 monhs)
- During early childhood (from 1-6 years) : 2kg/year
WEIGHT in kg = ( age in years x 2) + 8
- During late childhood (from 7-12 years) : 2.5kg/year
WEIGHT in kg = (age in years x 7) -5
